The Beauty of Generational Portraits
In anticipation of this Mother’s Day, I found myself becoming incredibly sentimental and filled with a sense of urgency to photograph my own beautiful mother and sweet daughter.
I spent a whole day focused around getting generational portraits. I don’t want to ever forget what my mother looks like and I want my daughter to always remember the rich legacy she has in love. I look forward to passing these family portraits on to her to share with her children and for them to know that they come from a family that cherishes the family bond.
I have always been nostalgic and passionate about documenting life through photography and my children and family have been at the core of that inspiration. I love to look at family pictures to see who has whose nose and little details such as similar smiles and matching dimples. Every photograph tells a story and every image encompasses a very personal feeling especially when it comes to our mothers.
I’ve tried to imagine my mother as a child or a young woman and it’s hard to think of her as anyone other than a mother because the depth of her love for her children is truly endless. My mother is incredibly nurturing, loving and patient. I cannot imagine a greater representation of a mother’s love.
Growing up I just assumed that everyone had a mom like mine and I took her for granted as most of us I’m sure do. As I got older, I was shocked to find that there were mothers that didn’t care about their children, mothers that really weren’t mothers at all. My mother is a constant blessing in my life and I wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world.
If you met my beautiful 5’4 mother you would say she is funny, sweet and easy to love and be yourself around. She’s a little shy at times but mostly a chatterbox. She has gorgeous dark black curly hair and I’m proud to say I inherited those curls along with her good skin. Unlike me however, my mom is not a risk taker, she is very cautious with her actions and aside from laughter she is a bit reserved with her feelings.
I’ve always desired more for my mother, having married at 19 and devoted her entire life to her family; she hasn’t seen much of the world and has done very little for herself. Yet, when I’ve asked her if she was given a do over what she would want she always replies that her kids have been all she’s ever wanted (sorry Dad, not sure you made the cut.)
Last year we had a scare with her health and the thought of losing my mother ripped me apart. I found myself keeping her voicemails in fear of one day not being able to hear her. I’m brought to tears just thinking about it, but I’m extremely happy to share that she’s doing great and her health is better than ever!
My mother always makes me feel safe and no matter where I am or who I may become I know that one look at her sweet face and everything will be ok. She has set the bar extremely high and I hope to be as good of a mother to my daughter as she has been to me. I love you A’ma!
A big thank you to Tammy, of Tammy Horton Photography for sharing her artist talent with us and capturing these beautiful generational portraits of my mother, daughter and I. We had a great time and will never forget the experience!
There are so many incredible mothers and supportive mother figures in the world that we adore and thank for their unwavering and unconditional love. This season, I want to personally encourage you to create a lasting loving imprint for your family with generational portraits.
