So you've scheduled your portrait session and now you might be concerned about how you're going to prepare for it. No need to worry! In this post, we will help ease your mind about one of the biggest preparation factors: what to wear to a photoshoot.
Whether you are preparing for a family session, couples portraits or even just child portraits, the most important thing when figuring out what to wear for a photoshoot, is that everyone in front of the camera feels comfortable and confident in the clothes they are wearing. What you wear should reflect your personality and individual style. You need to feel great in your clothes so that your confidence can shine and we can photograph you as naturally as possible. If you’re overly concerned about an article of clothing you’re going to be distracted from taking the best photos you can. Your images should bring back positive memories, not memories of how often you kept adjusting your clothes. As always, we strive to capture each client in a happy and relaxed state and that's why it's crucial that the clothes you bring to your portrait session make you feel that way.
Additionally, it is recommended that you wear neutral colors so that your photos are timeless and more versatile. Gray and cream colors are almost always better than black and white. We encourage that you keep the heavy patterns and big logos at home in order to keep the attention on the real star - YOU! If you are booked for a family session or are being photographed with multiple people, we definitely recommend you coordinate with each other. This does NOT mean exact matching, uniform type of coordination. This means wearing colors that compliment each other and don't direct people's attention to one individual. This might take some planning and communication, but it is well WORTH IT!
If you're thinking about bringing a few outfits to change into for a variety of looks, that is great, however, if we are doing an outdoor session, where getting changed is not the easiest, you might consider layering and accessorizing. Incorporate some layers, hats, scarfs, and jewelry and you can get a variety of looks while not having to change behind a bush. On the other hand, if changing behind a bush "ain't no thang” we definitely won't discourage that, buuuut we would recommend that you bring outfits that create a harmonious color palette so that there's a sense of cohesion throughout all of your photographs.
Regarding footwear, each session is different. Obviously, if you're just having headshots done you can wear any shoe your heart desires, yes, that means your Crocs, socks and sandals duo, Shape-ups, etc. we DON'T care. If you're doing an at-home session, bare feet are fine or whatever you would normally wear at home. Since we realize not every session is going to be casual, we advise our clients to bring shoes that appropriately suit the attire they will be wearing. Also, depending on your session location, we would suggest bringing a pair of comfortable shoes (athletic-type) to get to photography locations that aren't as easily accessible in your cute four-inch heels.
